The Dubuque Casket Company was founded in 1892 by Frank A. Beiler. It is located at 1798 Washington Street, in Dubuque, not far from the Dubuque-Wisconsin Bridge over the Mississippi River.
At one time it was one of the nation’s leaders in the manufacturing of caskets, ranking 21st in sales volume among 472 similar US companies. Dubuque Casket was unique in the industry for its custom construction of each order and had more than 400 customizations.
The company sold its product to funeral directors in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In 1988 the company was closed, and the building at 1798 Washington Street was sold to Boys Truck and Auto Parts.
In 2007, the property was renovated into affordable and special needs apartments by Gronen Properties.
